As part of CF’s award-winning integrated diversion and recovery model, we’re proud to introduce a new low-waste dining hall at CF Markville. This debut is part of a multi-year roll-out to CF properties across Ontario, and follows successful implementations in Western Canada. 

What is a low-waste dining hall?

CF’s low-waste dining halls include two things, a sorting station and advanced organic composting technology. This program incorporates better sorting and diversion of organics, plastics and other materials for recycling, while reducing the emissions from organic materials.

Designed in collaboration with Gorrie/Unwasted, The sorting stations are constructed from 95% recycled plastic, 85% recycled metal, and 65% recycled quartz, and are AODA compliant, with a section of the counterspace lowered for ease of access to patrons in wheelchairs. When guests have finished their meals, they can bring a tray to the sorting station where trained staff will properly separate the materials into waste, recycling, and organics, which will be sent to the on-site composter.

The advanced composting technology, from Terraforma Systems, significantly improves organics recycling, the most expensive waste stream for CF’s external haulers and an increasingly banned waste product at landfills. The technology also reduces the weight and volume of organics materials by up to 90 per cent through the application of heat and microbial decomposition. By reducing organic materials, CF is also able to cut the number of trucks needed to transport materials, which reduces harmful emissions from entering our atmosphere.
